Rare Skin infection kills dozens

April 21, 2012 Leave a comment

A rare skin disease has killed scores in Vietnam.

Vietnam now plans to ask for international help to find out what is causing a skin infection that has already killed 19 people.

More than 170 people in the country’s central province of Quang Ngai have reported symptoms.
The disease begins with a rash on the hands and feet: it can progress to liver problems and multiple organ failure.
Vietnamese health ministry tests have failed to pinpoint the cause of the unusual illness.

Discovery of Oxygen in outer space and possibility of Extra-terrestrial life

August 5, 2011 Leave a comment

Extra terrestrial life, oxygen, spaceScience has produced no credible evidence of presence or absence of intelligent life in outer space. Hundreds of years ago, it was not known that light could be used to make electricity or that rockets could be designed and they would overcome earth’s gravity and fly ever away from our planet.

Scientists have long wondered whether there is life beyond earth. Questions philosophers, astronomers and other curious humans have pondered include, are there living creatures on other planets? What do they look like? How do they communicate? What do they eat?

Scientists contend that for a planet to sustain life there has to be water, oxygen and sources of energy.
From earth’s perspective, conditions necessary for life to thrive include huge regions of liquid water, conditions favourable for the assembly of complex organic molecules, and energy sources to sustain metabolism.

The basis for what must be present to sustain life is quite contentious because such theories are based on what humans need to survive. However, some researchers postulate that what is necessary to sustain life on earth may not necessarily be required to sustain different creatures in other galaxies.

Oxygen in Space

Astronomers have recently found molecular oxygen in space.

While single atoms of oxygen have been found alone or incorporated into other molecules in outer space, the oxygen molecule (the one we breathe) had never been seen before.

The Herschel space telescope spotted the molecules in a star-forming region in the constellation of Orion.
Do we therefore conclude that there is life in other planets because oxygen has been discovered to exist outside earth?

People who believe in existence of extra-terrestrial life argue that it is a fact the¬ universe contains billions of galaxies. If each galaxy contains billions of stars and if a fraction of those stars have Earth-like planets, then maybe thousands of alien civilizations might exist across the cosmos.

Drug to Make Brains Stay Forever Young

Health, memory, forever young, brain booster When people get into middle age, 40s and 50s, the brain begins to accumulate too much of a signalling molecule called cAMP, which can stop the brain cells from reacting efficiently, leading to forgetfulness and distractedness.

A research team working with monkeys has found that when they administered certain drugs to the older monkeys via the fibres, including a chemical called guanfacine, the chemicals blocked the cAMP pathways and stirred up neural activity.

Guanfacine is currently an ingredient in a drug used to treat high-blood pressure in adults. The chemical is also in separate clinical trials to see if it improves working memory in the elderly.

Study leader Amy Arnsten, a neurobiologist at Yale University says that she and her team led previous studies showing that the drug improved working memory in monkeys, and those results have been repeated by other groups in both monkeys and humans.

She cautions that even if the drug is approved as a brain booster, it’s too early to say how much memory improvement a person could expect: “we can’t say it would bring you back to being a 30-year-old,” she said.

Sprint, Samsung Introduce Nexus S 4G Smartphone

Sprint, Samsung Introduce Nexus S 4G Smartphone In the event that AT&T was to take over T-Mobile, the question will be where Google will find support for its Android mobile phones. Sprint might be the answer to this question. Sprint and Samsung have introduced Nexus S 4G. This is Sprint’s first Google Android phone that is pure and is stocked with WiMAX.

Developers and tech gadget lovers are fond of “stock Android” for several reasons. Androids that get new versions of Android first are stock Androids. The reason behind this is that they will not need to wait in order to get overlays from the manufacturer reprogrammed. They are easy to hack and developers are fond of them as they interface properly with developer tools from Google.

Some people state that the experience of Google’s stock is more elegant than others like manufacturer overlays. An example of a manufacturer overlay that is not preferred is HTC sense. Sprint stated in a press release that Nexus S 4G clients will be among the first to get upgrades for Android software. All the same, the device will be able to get new apps and updates immediately they are available.

The Sprint Nexus S 4G Smartphone is exactly as it sounds. In looks, it is similar to the Samsung Nexus S. It has a black slab that is elegant together with an 800 by 400 – 4 inch display that is slightly curved. It has a 1 GHz processor which is combined with its other features in order to be at par with the Galaxy S series from Samsung.

Nexus S is currently the only Android 2.3 smartphone on the market. It is also the only one in the United States that has NFC technology. This technology has a high possibility of being used by banks for mobile payments in the future. From the name of the phone, you will find that it has 4G WiMAX from Sprint.

These should in turn allow the phone to download with speeds between 3 and 8 Mbps in about 30% of the United States. The phone can also work on 3G CDMA and has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n meaning it can work as a hotspot for 3G and 4G supporting up to 5 devices. It comes with 16GB of memory in it.

The press release that Sprint has done about the Nexus S heavily promotes services like Google Voice. This is a system that Google has created enabling people to use multiple devices on the web. The press releases also said that users of the Nexus S would be able to use their Sprint wireless phone number as their Google phone number. This can be done without having to port their number and thus avoiding charges related to porting and the chance of having service interruptions.

The question that is asked is if it will mark the shift for Google to use Sprint as the developer phone of choice. The problem with Sprint is that they use CDMA and most of the world uses GSM technology. In the event that AT& T merges with T-mobile, Google might be forced to deal with AT& T as it will be its only option. The Nexus S from Sprint will be available in later in 2011 at a price of about $200.

Plastic has been the most widely used product all over the world in recent years. There are over 10,000 different kinds of plastic. Plastics can be used to carry our food and drink, packaging consumer products, build toys and even for clothing.

But sad to say that plastic takes up to about 10 percent of our total waste stream and only 5 percent of all plastic is being recycled.

Plastic recycling is the process of recovering waste plastics and reprocessing it into new plastic material and useful products. It offers several environmental benefits, such as fewer toxins and less waste. By doing this, 25-50 percent less energy is used than manufacturing it anew.

Types of plastic products that can be recycled

Seven different types of plastic have been recognized and are given a category number. It can be found at the bottom of plastic containers.

Marked 1

This category contains (Polyethylene Terephthalate) PET or PETE plastics.
It includes:
– Soda and water bottles
– Medicine containers
– Plastic wrap
– Mouthwash bottles
– Food jars container
– Salad dressing bottles
Once Polyethylene terephthalate (PETE) has been processed by a recycling facility can become products like life jackets, sleeping bags, as well as fiberfill for winter coats and many other products such as combs, rope bean bags etc.

Marked 2

This category contains (high-density polyethylene) HDPE plastics.
It includes:
– Shampoo bottles
– Milk and juice containers
– Liquid laundry detergent containers
– Trash bags
– Yogurt containers

These plastics are often recycled into toys, piping, rope and plastic plumber.

Other Recyclable Plastics

– Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). It is commonly used in shower curtains, plastic and portable piping, medical tubing and vinyl dashboards.
– Polystyrene (Styrofoam). Used for beverage cups, packaging peanuts, meat trays as well as insulation.

There are a variety of ways that people can use coconut oil, this is because it is very beneficial in relieving stress, strengthen teeth and bones. It helps to maintain low cholesterol levels, boost metabolism, relieve kidney problems, and calm high blood pressure.

Coconut oil benefits accredit to the carpic acid, lauric acid, and caprylic acid it contains. These acids possess antifungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Each time lauric acid is absorbed into the body’s bloodstream, it automatically converts into a substance known as monolaurin, which helps cure viruses and fight off bacteria most commonly related to diseases such as cytomegalovirus, influenza, herpes, and HIV. It can also help to ward off monocytogenes, heliobacter pylori, and listeria.
